On January 29, 2012, the Associated Press released a story about two U.S. senators, Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Mark Pryor of Arkansas, who believe that “the federal government should help police departments nationwide obtain the tools and training needed to attack a rising scourge of driving under the influence”…that is, drugged drivers.
“Cops need a Breathalyzer-like technology that works to identify drug-impaired drivers’ on-the-spot — before they cause irreparable harm,” Senator Schumer said. “With the explosive growth of prescription drug abuse it’s vital that local law enforcement have the tools and training they need to identify those driving under the influence of narcotics to get them off the road.”
Here in California, we see too many DUIs and probably many drug-related DUIs that we don’t know about. The AP story talks about two innocent children, ages 4 and 5, who died in separate incidences because of possibly “drugged drivers” in New York City. Somehow, the government needs to find a way to help reduce these types of accidents.
In the bail bond industry, we see many cases related to DUIs and find that we bail out these individuals often more than once. I agree that there should be some type of onsite testing, perhaps using the individual’s saliva, so police can administer the test immediately after stopping someone who appears to be under the influence of anything that will harm innocent people, as well as the individuals themselves.
