Mississippi Courthouse Shooter held on $300k Bail

Mississippi-CourthouseWilliam B. Wells, 24, is being held on $300,000 bail for shooting a defendant outside of a Madison County courthouse. Wells was allegedly retaliating against the defendant for shooting his mother who was not fatally injured. Wells is a former firefighter who has previous aggravated assault charges. According to police he shot Kendrick Armond Brown in the small courtyard outside of the courthouse. Brown was the defendant in a drug case where Wells’ mother was set to testify against him. Brown died from the gunshot wounds at the courthouse.

Bail was created to allow defendants awaiting court to be released from jail. Setting bail in cases has been successful in assuring court appearances while easing the burden on over-crowded jail systems. A judge has the right to deny bail to a defendant particularly if the judge feels that the defendant poses a risk to the community or has a high likelihood of fleeing the jurisdiction. Many times bail is set to reflect the seriousness of the crime and/or the criminal record of the defendant.
