Owen Labrie once attended one of the most prestigious prep schools in the nation and was on his way to Harvard before being convicted of sexually assaulting an underage student. Labrie, 20, was sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of 1 felony and several misdemeanors including child endangerment and sexual assault. Labrie appealed the decision and was out on bail when he violated the terms of his release by missing court-ordered curfew. The former prep school student had his bail revoked and was sent to prison for the past two months. On review the State Supreme Court recommended that bail be reinstated. The bail hearing was held at a Merrimack County Superior Court where the judge followed the Supreme Court’s recommendations and put an additional requirement on his release. Labrie will be required to wear a GPS electronic monitoring device while he is out on bail awaiting his appeal.
How to avoid bail revocation
Bail revocation generally occurs when a person violates a condition of their release or commits a crime while they are released on bail awaiting their trial. Having your bail revoked is completely avoidable. One of the most common issues is failing to appear at court. Unless an attorney can appear on your behalf, you are required to appear at all court dates regarding your case. Failing to appear can result in a warrant being issued for your arrest and the bail that you have posted being revoked. This can be costly and may put you back in jail. You cannot afford to risk your money and your freedom on a poor decision. Always follow all orders of the court, whether you are asked to abstain from alcohol or follow a particular curfew. Failure to follow any court orders will result in a warrant being issued for your arrest. The court will not tread lightly if they feel that you have violated the conditions of your release.
