Dr. Munir Uwaydah, an orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles, is being held along with 14 associates on multi-million dollar bail bonds in what is being called California’s largest health fraud scheme. The Doctor and his associates are accused of defrauding insurance companies out of $150 million. The Los Angeles County District Attorney alleges that Uwaydah told over 20 patients that he would perform surgery when he had his physician’s assistant actually perform the surgery after they were placed under anesthesia. The doctor, according to the indictment, was not present for the surgeries that were performed by someone who had not even attended medical school.
Dr. Uwaydah currently awaits extradition from Germany while his co-defendants, including another doctor and a lawyer, were held on multi-million dollar bail. One co-defendant is no stranger to trouble with the law. Uwaydah’s office assistant was acquitted not long ago for strangling and killing the doctor’s ex-girlfriend. The office assistant is being held on $18.5 million bail in the current case.
The twists continue in this already convoluted case as one of the prosecutors in the strangling case is now representing a defendant charged in the current insurance fraud scheme. This evidence in the current case appears to span for more than a decade.
