Jason Van Dyke who has been accused of 1st Degree Murder in the fatal shooting of young, black teen, Laquan McDonald posted bail on Monday. The bail was set by an Illinois judge at $1.5 million. Van Dyke came under scrutiny when he shot McDonald a reported 16 times in 15 seconds. Many believe that the shooting follows a long line of racially motivated killings by officers. Protestors took to the streets of Chicago following Van Dyke’s release on bail believing that he should have remained in jail until the case is completed.
The Mayor of Chicago, the Cook County State’s Attorney and the Chicago Police Department have been under the microscope for the handling of the shooting which occurred in October 2014. The dashcam video of the incident was not released for over a year and finally came to light on November 24, 2015. The City of Chicago previously reached a $5 million settlement for the family of McDonald as a result of this incident.
