Berkeley: Bail Posted in DUI with Injury

Esteban Slavitt, 26, was arrested and charged with felony DUI causing great bodily injury after allegedly striking a 21-year-old Berkeley student.  According to police, the student was jogging near the UC Berkeley campus shortly before 10:00 pm Monday evening when Slavitt struck her with his car.  The collision occurred near the intersection of Durant Avenue and Dana Street After an investigation by the Berkeley Police Department, it was determined that Slavitt had been driving under the influence and caused the injury to the victim.  The student was taken to a local hospital for critical injuries.  Slavitt was released from custody after posting bail.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged him with felony driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.  The Berkeley student involved in the incident is being treated for a head injury sustained during the collision.  Slavitt is expected to return to court next week.  If convicted of felony DUI with injury, Slavitt could face several years in prison, with additional time added for great bodily injury resulting from the accident.
