As Cottone asks, “How can people be expected to know all the laws governing their conduct when no one even knows exactly how many criminal laws exist?” Read more: here
Wow, I read that and it really puts some perspective on the argument “Ignorance of the law, is no excuse.” If they can’t even tell you how many laws exist, how can you be held responsible to know each and every one? Also, keep in mind how many laws are on the books that are so old they don’t even apply to current circumstances. You are supposed to know all of them? Most lawyers don’t know all of them, but they are good at doing their research when fighting a case. That is why we always recommend using an attorney! It’s not like they send out mailers with the new laws that are put in place.
I think about an article I read about the brain and in The Information Age, how much sensory data our brains receive each day, and how much our brains can process. It is said “Our brains are registering 40 million bits of sensory information per second and most of it is processed subconsciously or preconsciously.” In The Information Age, we are bombarded with so much information and it is coming at us from every angle. With easy access to mobile smartphones and devices, people can reach us 24 hours a day in many forms, from a text to Facebook, email or a phone call. Advertising companies know this and hit us every way they can. It is also said “city dwellers 30 years ago would have seen approximately 2,000 advertising message per day. They estimate that today we are subjected to about 5,000 ads per day” Read more: here
In addition to being a full-time employee or business owner, plus being a full-time parent and productive member of society, you’re also supposed to be a full-time law student? I like to think we all understand that things like rape, murder, theft, etc. are bad, but all these other “regulatory crimes” are getting out of hand.
Did you know that in eleven states in this country allow you to have sexual relations with and animal? Did you know, in the U.S. you are allowed to own a tank and/ or a flamethrower? (If you can afford one) I think it is absurd to think I have to know every law in my state and any other state I may be visiting, other than universal things like speeding, running red lights, etc., I don’t see how it is possible to charge me and possibly sentence me to jail time for something there is no way of me knowing unless I have a law degree. What steps are the states taking to educate each citizen on the laws to make sure they are a productive member of society? Seems to me they want to keep us ignorant of the laws just to get us in the system, but what do I know, I am not an attorney!
