Policing the Police – A Powerful Step in a Monumental Direction

fresno-policeThe contrast in perspective in this article is phenomenal! I enjoyed reading it very much and found a few pieces in it that I have heard, read and seen in other places. I feel like the NYPD is on track with doing a better job with the training of their officers, I mean to throw someone out in to the Urban Jungle and give them a quota of things to do is silly to me. Every student needs a teacher and what better way to do that than with a veteran officer? Showing him the ropes, asking the tough questions and laying the ground work to create better cops.

When the sergeant says “He’s being handled with kid gloves,” and “They want him to, basically, give everybody a hug. Which, listen, if it works, I’ll eat my sock.” It made me think about an article I read out of Fresno, CA about a community-policing ethos that is about encouraging police to build relationships within the community instead of a “Zero tolerance” policy. They have been slowly gaining steam but have been continuing the program since its creation in 2002 and even after the funding for that program dried up in 2005. They have seen incredible results and drops in violent crime all across the board, with their focus being some of the most violent areas in Fresno. So sergeant, hope you like the taste of socks?! To the Sergeant’s credit he did point out in the article that policing needs to be different in different areas, because not all places are the same.

I defiantly am happy to hear that the NYPD are taking steps in the right direction, I am tired of hearing about police brutality and innocent people getting hurt. I am also tired of being afraid of officers and the fact I could be shot at any given moment by a public servant whose salary I pay with my tax dollars. I have said it before and I will say it again, Police officers have a hard job, I get that! The second they put that uniform on, people instantly hate them and they deal with some of the most intense situations that life has to offer. It is a tough job, no doubt about that but like we see in this article there are better ways to go about it, and now with the public not taking it anymore we see the police taking steps in the right direction. Nothing will be perfect, but we must constantly be striving to improve to do the best we can for all of us or we will fall short of doing the right thing.
