Bail Bondsmen market their services in a variety of ways, but the most direct and not always legal way is by hanging out at local jails and court houses to solicit new arrestees and/or their families for their business, if bail is an option.
However, in many states the Department of Insurance regulates how bondsmen can solicit for business and often this “direct” approach to selling bail bond services at jails and courts is not legal. But, in many states bail bondsmen will solicit for this business, regardless of the possibility of losing their licenses, primarily because it has become harder and harder to get the business they are accustomed to with the current economic situation and the huge amount of competition.
Also, it has been reported that some female bail agents will dress provocatively to attract and compete for bail bond business at jails and courts, which tends to diminish the trustworthiness of a bail agent. Every bondsman approaches their business differently, so when actually choosing a bail agent to post bail for you or a loved one, it’s a good idea to do some homework to find an honest bondsman who has integrity and makes you feel comfortable, not someone who makes you feel pressured into using their services.
Looks can be deceiving, so don’t be fooled by the attractive cover. Be sure that you’ve made the right decision before signing anything and handing over any money to a bail agent that solicits business at a jail or court house. It’s suggested that you use the Internet to find a bondsman that services your area and who you are confident will help you get your loved one released from custody.
Honesty, trust and integrity are the key characteristics of a good bondsman.
