Weird California Laws

Things You Didn’t Know Were Illegal… Until Now

California is famous for many things including beautiful beaches, celebrity mansions, and picturesque mountains, but one thing you might not know about is their weird laws.

California has some of the quirkiest laws and depending on where you are in the state could spell big trouble. So, think again the next time you want to bother a lizard at a city park in Fresno or walking a camel down Palm Canyon Drive.

According to California.com here are some of the strangest laws in the state:

  • Women cannot wear a housecoat while driving. (Although this could not be independently verified through a Vehicle Code section it is mentioned on several reputable websites)

  • In Los Angeles, it is unlawful for a person to wash their neighbor’s car without permission.

  • It is illegal to walk a camel down Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs between 4 and 6 pm. (The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office even mentioned this one in a blog.)

  • It is against city ordinance to curse on a miniature golf course in Long Beach.

  • Think twice about annoying a lizard in a Fresno city park. An ordinance makes it illegal to bother the reptile at city parks.

These are just a few of the wacky laws still lurking on the books in California. Read the full California.com article “27 Strange Laws in California” to find even more curiosities. As noted in the article, it may be easier for California to pass new laws than to get rid of some of the oddballs that are currently in the system.
