California Bail Information and Charges

Vehicle Code 20002a

When a person is arrested for violating Vehicle Code 20002(a), the person is arrested for committing a hit-and-run that has caused property damage. The violation is a felony offense that generally is associated with a person that has been driving under the influence as well. The offense itself carries a bail of about $1,050, but when the arrest is in conjunction with an arrest for a DUI, then the bail amount will increase to include both bails.

If a person is given the chance to make bail, the defendant is being offered the opportunity to get out of jail while he or she awaits his or her trial. In many cases, the defendant will exercise his right to this opportunity and either pay the bail amount on his or her own or appeal to family members for help paying bail.

In the event that the defendant requires additional assistance paying bail, the defendant can use the services of a bail bondsman. A bail bondsman will partner with the defendant by providing the funds that are necessary to release the defendant. When the defendant is released from jail, the bail bonding company will then have custody of the defendant until the defendant’s trial. This means that the bail bonding agency is responsible for ensuring that the defendant arrives in court on the day of his or her trial and that he or she fulfill all legal obligations to the court system.

When the defendant fulfills the legal obligation, the bail bonding agency will receive a refund of the bail bond amount. However, if the defendant does not fulfill the legal obligation, then the bail bonding agency will not receive a refund, unless, in some cases, the agency can track the defendant down and return him to court.

The defendant is responsible for paying the bail bonding agency a non-refundable down payment that is usually equal to about ten percent of the total cost of the bail. In the event that the defendant is found to be innocent of the charges, the defendant will not receive a refund of the bail amount.
