California Bail Information and Charges

Vehicle Code 20001

When a person is arrested because the violated Vehicle Code 20001, the person is in jail because he or she committed a hit and run that caused injury or death. In most cases, this crime is associated with a DUI and is a felony offense. The bail amount is $3,500 for this offense.

When a person is in jail, he or she will sometimes have the option of getting out of jail on bail. Bail is the amount of money that a defendant will have to put up either through loans from family or friends or through financing. Many people that wish to get out of jail employ a bail bondsman to post the bail for them. The bail bondsman provides the full funds for the bail bond. As soon as the funds are made available, the defendant will be released into the custody of the bail bondsman.

After the defendant is released into the bondsman’s custody, there are some legal obligations that he or she will have to fulfill that relate to the hit and run arrest. These obligations include showing up to court to stand trial for the offense. When the defendant fulfills all of his or her legal obligations, the bail bond will be refunded to the entity that supplied it. If the person was free thanks to a bail bondsman, then the bail bondsman will get the refund of the bond amount.

In exchange for the service that a bail bondsman provides, a defendant is required to pay the bail bondsman with a down payment. The down payment is usually ten percent of the amount of the bail. As such, if the bail is set at $3,500, then the defendant would pay the bondsman a total of $350. This money will not be refunded to the defendant, even if the defendant is found to be innocent.
