$6.4 Million Bail set for California Brain Surgeon accused of rape

Dr. James Kohut was arrested on May 14, 2017 on several child sexual abuse charges. The neurosurgeon was practicing out of the Santa Cruz at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center and Dominican Hospital at the time of his arrest. The Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office believes that Kohut had also planned to impregnate women to continue his perversion with their children. He was charged with 11 counts of sexually abusing children under the age of 14. Two nurses were also arrested on related charges. Bail was set at $6.45 million for the brain surgeon. As a condition of his release, Kohut would also have to remain on electronic monitoring.

The case against Dr. Kohut and the two nurses surfaced when one of the husband’s of an accused nurse turned over a video showing sexual abuse. The nurse implicated Kohut after being charged. Her bail was set at $500k. Kohut’s medical license has been suspended pending the outcome of the case and his assets have been frozen as his wife recently filed for separation. All parties involved are facing life in prison if convicted on all counts. Kohut remains in the Santa Cruz County Jail on suicide watch. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 27.
